That's the spirit! It would be great fun if it happens, and if it became obvious that Trump has some difficulty moving up and down stairs.

Trump should have to wear a birthday hat resembling the Nazi German hat with the pointy metal lightning rod attached to top, when it’s thunder storming, to keep his yellow coiffure from getting wet.

It was always about Trump. He has absolutely no reverence for our veterans and military. He envisions a lovely military parade for him just like Russia and North Korea have for their leaders. Trump is Despicable. Protest Protest Protest. NO KINGS!!!

Reverence? The US hasn't fought an honorable conflict since 1953. There's not a lot to celebrate when your military is helping a genocide in Palestine, and bombing the only heroes who are opposing Israel.

What fight did he fight honorably in 1953? He would have been 6 years old.

Trump has reverence for the military when he needs them to do his dirty work, which is what I think is going to be the case on Saturday. Due to the ENORMOUS anticipated protests scheduled, my guess is that he will invoke the “Insurrection Act” to turn the parade into a Trojan horse.

The costume house industry both family operated or studio owned rents clothes. That’s the business. Clothes all kinds of clothes. A customer opens an account and costumers pull the order for their projects. No one asks what political party or money affiliates they belong to. They come and pull Nazis, KKK Skin Heads , bridesmaids and Nuns. They pull current day they pull Western and all your favorite character period clothes. And yes, they pull Military Uniforms. We don’t read the scripts, we rent clothes. I guess you would like us to discriminate against the producers with projects that don’t align with your beliefs….really now, who do you sound like?? Take a minute I’ll wait.

Hi Elaine. No argument intended, just legit concern & question.

IATSE 892 designer here -

Always a fan of my 705 costumers!

Did they fly you all to DC, put you up, per diem you all? Take care of you as a union costume house employee?

As we all are aware, this administration is very Anti- Union. And his need for dictatorship like optics far outweighs his respect for our service men.

This is a tricky issue with this “birthday” parade.

Hoping that the heat MPCC is taking within our industry will actually be worth it - that this invoice will keep the signatory doors open & Union brothers and sisters are taken care of!

I’d never go against any union, but I absolutely find this situation very complicated.

I hope MPCC got their PO paid in advance.

3 out of 4,are duel card holders hired specifically to compete the project.

I find it puzzling why Union members are having a problem with any Costume House fulfilling an order. The Guild and the Locals pride themselves on diversity and exclusivity. Would you want IATSE to discriminate against projects that don’t align with some political ideology? Because that is the slippery slope isn’t it?

We are in the business of clothes-not politics

Elaine, I started my comment stating I had legitimate union questions - and letting you know I was an 892 / 829 union member. Same team, we are kin. I have decades in the unions & previously owned an independent costume shop myself. I can see both sides. Which is why I asked YOU the question specifically even though we don't know each other, because after reading through the comment thread and noticing you are very passionate about defending the costume house (which I am not saying is wrong) I assumed incorrectly, (my bad) that you actually were a part of the crew pulling / and or part of the costumers working on site in DC. You seem to know more than anyone else thus far. Also, when the article hit social media & was sent to me, I called MPCC directly to ask some questions - as I did not want to believe something I saw on social media without getting first hand knowledge - as this is definitely causing polarizing conversation. I called MPCC, I was calm, I asked a couple questions, at first they denied any rentals, and then the phone was passed. I expressed my own PERSONAL concern - NOT speaking on behalf of my Guild or Union - and I was hung up on.

I was asking if the crew was hired under union contract - with benefits. With everything going on in our industry right now - and the lack of work and how desperately people are hurting for days and insurance, I was hoping that union guidelines were followed. I backed that up with the FACT that this administration is anti union. I was sent this article a bunch of times by union costumers & designers on both coasts - with some scared that members of their families are in danger of being ripped out of their homes as our days go by. You see what is happening here...because this administration is against everything that our unions stand for. So, yes, there are legitimate questions, at the very least, to be asked about a company supporting this administration in this way.

I don't care what side of the political isle you sit on - you seem to have decided that you wanted to answer the questions here, so I asked.

Again, my bad.

Please do not insult me by insinuating that I would think that costumers did not do their jobs perfectly - because if there is anything on this planet that I do have any faith in, it's the film industry (and our costume world specifically) and their ability to handle any challenge in front of them, to facilitate their jobs perfectly to the smallest detail, to stand up for their union brothers and sisters, and to have each other's backs. And in this case, I KNOW the union members dressing our soldiers to celebrate 250 years of service would do so with the utmost of respect, more so than the so-called president who cares about his political optics and using soldiers to feed his own ego. (Remember the “suckers and losers” comment?)

Whether or not actual soldiers were wearing those uniforms was a question I had. Because if pardoned J6 agitators, Proud boys, or or other non-service men were "dressed up" for political optics, well, that would really be something worth fighting about.

In Solidarity,

Melissa

You obviously don’t know me if you feel a need to school me regarding the current administration and their views regarding unions or their views in general. I’m aware.

Discrimination is wrong. Don Lemon was told misinformation which he stated as facts. I tried to correct them he did not respond. I wanted to correct them. I wanted it known that only active military personnel would be fitted in the period uniforms being provided. No actors. I had eyes on and made it clear not hands on. Most contracts have NDA’s we all sign them. If you thought I was passionate about defending the costume house maybe I was just passionate about the freedom to not discriminate or shame a business. Discrimination has no place in this industry period.

Expand full comment
Elaine O’Driscoll's avatar

Let me add one more topic for you to consider. Since only a handful of people knew the contract details, one must ask, Who planted this false story regarding actors? Who wanted to cause the drama coast to coast targeting one specific costume house? Who thought they had something to gain? Who were those two guys in Don Lemon’s story? Has anyone ever worked with them? Who caused the divisiveness and for what reasons ? If you have ever had to pull that amount of uniforms, belt equipment, guns , weapons and helmets, you know they couldn’t come from just one costume house. We as costumers need to stop eating our own.

In Solidarity
