Trying, trying not to get too excited but … let me offer a slightly different and perhaps more optimistic take. Mamdani won in what can only be described as a landslide for a young, political unknown from a socially unknown minority. Perhaps many, many voters have absorbed the lesson that, if you ignore politics and claim that “it makes no difference”, you wind up with Donald Trump. I believe that a sufficient number of New Yorkers (and just maybe Americans in general) may take home the lesson that you MUST be involved. You MUST listen. You MUST make a choice. If you do not, MAGA wins and you wind up with Trump. Anything is better than that.

Admittedly, 70% of what the candidate promises will never come to pass. That’s governing as opposed to campaigning. But at the very least we got to know what Mandami would like to do, regardless of whether he accomplishes it or not. Similarly, we really did get to know what Trump would like to do. He didn’t hide it and now we’re stuck with it. I’m more than willing to choose Mamdani’s hopes rather than Trump’s. It is likely, I hope, that a majority of Americans will agree with me.
